The Miracle League of Amherstburg teamed with the town’s Jr. C hockey club in presenting its annual Halloween Party Saturday.

The party was held at the AMA Sportsmen’s Club and saw the teams rotate in throughout the day to enjoy the festivities and be thanked for their involvement throughout the year. The fall season ended Oct. 17 with Saturday’s party seeing players get their awards for the season.

Chuck Bondy, president of Miracle League’s board of directors, said it was the third year the Integrity Amherstburg Admirals have helped out. He said it is incredible the amount of volunteer time they put in, noting the players and members of the staff were out three times this past season.

“We’re here to help any way we can,” said Admirals’ co-owner Matt Fox. “Community involvement is something we want to address this year. With our new sponsor, it is a priority to get out into the community this year.”

Fox said the Admirals get rewarded for their volunteer efforts as well.

“It’s great to see all the athletes come out with smiles on their faces,” said Fox.

Town council has granted its permission for three new billboards for the Miracle League of Amherstburg and now awaits final approval from the County of Essex and ERCA.

Two four-foot by eight-foot billboards are planned for the north and south entrances to town while a third, larger, billboard will be placed near the Libro Centre sign. All signs will champion the fact that Amherstburg has the first Miracle League diamond in Canada.

A second has been built near Ottawa.

Miracle League board president Chuck Bondy and fellow committee members Gaye McGee and Tim Hunt appeared at town council’s meeting Monday night with Bondy stating Miracle League has paid for the signs and simply wants the town to install them and take ownership of them

Bondy said the board is “incredibly proud of what this league has to offer the 140 players from Amherstburg, Windsor and Essex County and their families.” Bondy said there are 15 people on the board, with everyone giving selflessly of themselves.

“Everything is about the players and their families,” he said.

Councillor Diane Pouget praised the volunteers for being dedicated and instrumental in making the league a success, but wondered if the large sign was capable of being installed by the town’s public works department.
