“Emily’s Walk” held to benefit Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario
Posted June 26, 2013

A local girl with spina bifida and hydrocephalus led a walk Sunday evening to aid the fight against the condition that she is afflicted with.

Emily Beauchamp, 9, and her family led “Emily’s Walk” through King’s Navy Yard Park with the proceeds benefitting the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SB & H) Association of Ontario.

“Emily is very excited this year,” said her mother Janice. “She loves seeing her family and friends come out and support her.”

Emilys Walk

June is Spina Bifida Awareness month and also the month Emily was born with the condition. It was frightening for Janice and husband Kelly to find out what their daughter had.

“It was very scary for us,” said Janice. “We had no idea what that was. We were very grateful to have had somewhere to turn to in time of crisis and uncertainty. The SB & H Association has been a constant resource and foundation of support. It is important to give back.”

Janice said the walk is growing every year with over 30 participants taking part this year. The walk usually raises about $300 but she expected to surpass that this year.

“Emily is a happy, loving child but will face many challenges in her lifetime,” said Janice. “It gives us hope to know that SB & H will be there every step of the way.”

Janice added their family wants to ensure that treatment options are available for those with spina bifida and hydrocephalus to enhance their quality of life.

Emma Carosella and Jake Simone of Anderdon Public School attended the University of

Windsor Social Justice Forum and took a challenge posed by the University to raise money for a

community program. The two students took the challenge to heart and organized a Twooney drive

to raise funds for the Amherstburg Miracle League. During an assembly one of the videos on our

website was presented to the student body and Emma and Jake asked for each of the students to

contribute one twooney. Money was collected for one week and on Satudary, May 5, 2013 Michelle

Vigneux of Amherstburg Miracle League accepted a cheque from Emma in the sum of $800.00

during the 2:30 game. Congratulations to Emma and Jake on a successful fundraiser.

On March 7, 2013 Stompin Tom Connors a proud Canadian and the singer of the Canada Day Song that we start each of our baseball games with passed away.  He left the following letter for us fellow Canadians.

"Hello friends,

I want all my fans, past, present, or future, to know that without you, there would have not been any Stompin' Tom.

It was a long hard bumpy road, but this great country kept me inspired with its beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world.

I must now pass the torch, to all of you, to help keep the Maple Leaf flying high, and be the Patriot Canada needs now and in the future.

I humbly thank you all, one last time, for allowing me in your homes, I hope I continue to bring a little bit of cheer into your lives from the work I have done.
